West Tennessee Presbytery met Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Kirby Pines Estates in Memphis, Tennessee. Elder Mark Maddox was elected Moderator and the Reverend Linda Glenn was elected Vice-Moderator. The Reverend Alan Meinzer, vice moderator of the General Assembly, was seated but did not address the body.
Presbytery approved petitioning the Synod of Great Rivers to divide West Tennessee Presbytery along “orthodox” and “progressive” theological lines. Added a standing rule allowing congregations to leave the presbytery and retain their property if they disagree with the body over issues of “conscience.” Rescinded previously elected delegates to the Synod of Great Rivers and elected a new slate. Received memorial to remain unified despite theological differences.
Granted permission to Dresden Cumberland Presbyterian Church and New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church (WC) to rebuild after tornadoes destroyed their properties. Presbyterial offering collected $2,870 for the aforementioned churches.
Closed Morella Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kenton, Tennessee, leaving remnant congregation as of yet unattached. Released the Reverend Joshua Harper to the United Church of Christ and the Reverend Emily Trapp Young to Hope Presbytery. Received the Reverend Hyub Kim from the World Korean Presbyterian Church as a licentiate. Received Matthew Espey and Mitchell Newby as candidates. Approved the Reverend Tiffany McClung to serve Peace Lutheran Church in Memphis in addition to Brunswick Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Approved both constitutional amendments. Cancelled June 2022 presbytery meeting in an abundance of caution over COVID-19.
