Welcome back to The Pinch, lessons you can use when you are in a pinch.
I hesitate to put this in The Pinch seeing that this is a very delicate subject to handle in youth group. You may want to plan ahead with this one but maybe you just feel the need to have a conversation with your group about issues of sexual abuse and/or assault.
This video came across my Facebook feed today. It is a poem written by Kayley Dixon a 14-year-old teen. She wrote this poem as a part of an announcement at an event that $250,000 was given out for 11 community groups, with the goal of preventing sexual violence and supporting survivors. You can read more about this here: Nova Scotia launches next phase of sexual violence strategy.
Her poem is titled “A Touch Of Sexual Assault”
It’s a beautiful and haunting poem about being a teenage girl in the world today.
If you use this as part of your lesson maybe you could split up the guys and girls and discuss their thoughts separately. After that maybe come back together and discuss as a group. Might want to read a scripture like 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 (one body) or 1 Corinthians 13:16-17 (you are God’s temple) along with discussing Kayley’s poem.
How have you discussed sexual abuse/sexual assault in your group? What additional things would you add to this discussion (questions, scriptures, etc). Share in the comment section below.
