Beginning with the January 2020 edition of The Cumberland Presbyterian Magazine, The Young Adult Ministry Council (YAMC) of the CPC will be writing articles in the magazine and online through our blog and social media, providing book reviews, and more, all focusing on young adults and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Our YAMC met last fall to discuss our plans for 2020 and beyond and after much discussion decided to focus this year on the state of young adults and how they can reconnect or remain connected to the CPC. We hope that this will provide some insight into young adults as well as how churches can minister to and with young adults. We already have opportunities through our denomination to stay connected through the YAMC, Conectados, and our Young Adult Retreats at Montgomery Bell State Park every spring. But we know there is so many that don’t stay connected after high school or sense a disconnect due to moving away from their home congregation or to a town where there is no CP Church.
In the first article, I share about the research compiled by Barna and World Vision they called the Connected Generation. There research uncovered some fascinating information regarding young adults and faith. One of the most important is that 32% of global young adults say, “someone believes in me.” From there research of over 15,000 young adults from 18-35 years old across 25 countries and nine languages said that someone believes in them. I wonder if we were to take a poll of our youth in our churches what the stats would be? Do the younger people in our churches think we believe in them?
My hope this year and beyond is to show that I as the coordinator of youth and young adult ministries in the CPC, us the Young Adult Ministry Council of the CPC, do believe in young adults and we hope to show them and the church we do, we all do, our denomination desires a deeper connection, a stronger bond, with those of you who grew up calling our denomination home. I hope you will join us this year as we share some stories, insight, ideas, from young adults in our denomination. I hope it will inspire our churches and our young adults to seek one another and establish deeper bonds with the CPC. Make sure to check out the first article in the CP Magazine and follow us on social media and our blog here online.
And if you are a young adult we hope you will join us March 27-29, 2020 at Montgomery Bell State Park for our annual young adult retreat.
