The Reverend Sammy Kay Romines, 71, died October 14, 2021, as the result of an ATV accident on his farm near Bowling Green, Kentucky. Sam, semi-retired from the ministry in 2019, was a member of Cumberland Presbytery and the long-time pastor of Lewisburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Logan County, Kentucky. When he wasn’t preaching, he attended the Bowling Green Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Sam served the judicatories of the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination in a number of roles including serving as president of the Ministry Council, chairperson of a General Assembly Task Force on Leadership, and as a member of the General Assembly Council. Sam was a member of the Lewisburg Rural Volunteer Fire Department and served as a chaplain for the police. Sam and wife Elaine operated the “Alive and Fuzzy” alpaca farm just off Russellville Road southwest of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Born February 17, 1950, in Glasgow, Kentucky, to Curtis Andrew Romines and Ruby Lee Estes, Sam became a Christian in 1959. He was baptized by the Reverend Jessie Gibson and joined the Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Canmer, Kentucky, in June. He graduated from Hart Memorial High School in 1968 and came under the care of Cumberland Presbytery. He was licensed in 1972 before graduating from Western Kentucky University in 1973. Sam was ordained by Cumberland Presbytery in 1974. The Reverend Richard Hughes preached Sam’s ordination sermon and the Reverend Richard Brown delivered the charge. He earned a degree from Memphis Theological Seminary in 1976 before returning to Western and completing a masters degree in 1985.
Over the course of his ministry, Sam served churches in Cumberland, Memphis, Owensboro, and Logan Presbyteries. After the middle judicatory realignment of 1988/1989, Sam was in the expanded Cumberland Presbytery where he served as Missions Coordinator. He supplied or pastored numerous Cumberland Presbyterian churches in Kentucky including Kellyville, Mt. Moriah, Good Hope, Shady Grove, Williston, Mt. Zion, Mt. Olivet, Lewisburg, and Gills Chapel.
Sam and Aluria Noe married May 30, 1975. They had one daughter, Angelia Gayle Romines. Sam married Elaine Painter March 3, 2018, a few years after the death of Aluria Noe on May 9, 2015.
