The Reverend Endia J. Scruggs, 79, pastor emerita of Madkins Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, died April 28, 2023. Endia was born August 19, 1943, in Madison County, Alabama, and educated in the Madison Country School System. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees in Religion from the Heritage Bible College in Huntsville, Alabama. She began preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1973 and was ordained in the the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America (CPCA). She was the first woman of the CPCA denomination to be called to an established congregation, Hills Chapel CPCA in Decatur, Alabama. She was the pastor of this congregation for 8 ½ years. One year later, she was called to the pastorate of the Madkins Chapel CPCA in Huntsville, Alabama, the largest in the CPCA denomination, from which she recently retired.
Endia was the first woman to serve as moderator of the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America. She was the first moderator to serve two consecutive terms. She served as moderator and vice-moderator of the Huntsville Presbytery of the CPCA. She served as a member of the General Assembly Executive Board of the CPCA, as vice-moderator of the Alabama Synod of the CPCA, and on various committees of the Huntsville Presbytery.
