Huntsville, Alabama, August 19, 2020: “Congressman John Lewis said when you see something that is not just, you have to speak up,” said Mitchell Walker, president of the Greater Huntsville Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship and pastor of Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America which is than a mile from the Madison County Courthouse.
Walker referred to the Confederate Monument in front of the courthouse in downtown Huntsville. About two-dozen religious leaders from three different traditions added their voices to those of Huntsville business leaders and the Huntsville City Council who have already called for the statue’s relocation.
“You have to say something. You have to do something. That’s why we are here today from across the lengthy and breadth of this community. We stand here today in united in thought and determined in purpose to say this Confederate monument and marker have stayed on these grounds way too long. It’s time for them to go,” Walker said.
