The Cumberland Presbyterian Magazine is the publication of record of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Obituaries appear in the Cumberland Presbyterian Magazine because we believe notice deserves to be paid to a person’s death because they are newsworthy. Typically, we find the deaths of Cumberland Presbyterian clergy and denominationally active elders to be newsworthy. On rare occasion, we also print obituaries of Cumberland Presbyterians who are noteworthy for reasons other than their church activities. For the same token, we sometimes print obituaries of persons who are not actively Cumberland Presbyterian but who have been significant to the ministry of the denomination. We do not print sponsored obituaries, nor do we print family submitted obituaries without editing them. Obituaries for the CP usually have a different focus than obituaries written by family members as a tribute or even by the press in general. Our obituaries are factual and verifiable. We focus on a person’s service to the church which we prefer to base on documentary evidence drawn from judicatory records or other primary sources, not the often rose-tinted memories of persons personally involved. We do not include an overabundance of family information. We do not sugar-coat our obituaries but we are never unkind.
