Overnight on August 20-21, 2021, more than 15 inches of rain was reported to have fallen in areas west of Nashville, Tennessee, according to the National Weather Service. As of noon on August 24, 2021, at least 22 people had been confirmed dead and over 50 remained missing.
As of yet, there are no reports of damage directly to any Cumberland Presbyterian Churches. However, some individual Cumberland Presbyterians have lost their homes, cars, and possessions to the flood waters. Waverly, Tennessee, in Humphreys County is the epicenter of the flood damage. There are several Cumberland Presbyterian churches and a relatively large Cumberland Presbyterian population in and around Humphreys County.
The Reverend Nate Mathews, pastor of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Lubbock, Texas, and his wife, Anna, are both from the Waverly area. After worship on Sunday, August 22, 2021, Nate and Anna traveled home to be with their families. Nate’s sister and Anna’s mother have both lost everything.
Both Waverly and Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian churches (Nashville Presbytery) as well as other churches have been designated as donation and assistance drop off points but, according to Rev. Mathews, so many vehicles were destroyed during the storm that survivors find it difficult to reach the churches.
