Ephesians 1:17-19 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.
Reflect
I remember the fire that took place in my heart when I first became a Christian. I was excited to grow and learn. People warned me about the fire staying lit in my heart, that if not tended the fire may go out. I could end up like the seed on the rocky soil that grew up quickly but soon died.
I will say that it almost happened. I devoured books by Calvin and Luther. I studied the apologetics of Lewis and Van Till. I read all the great commentaries. I debated with my friends. Then I grew a little tired. I grew stale. I remember the warnings from all my mentors.
While I was taking classes at Covenant Seminary in St Louis one of my professors told us how he started his day. He set his alarm clock for one and a half hours before he needed to get up and he said he just started thinking about the blessings he had as a child of God. He said at first it was hard, but soon the hour and a half flew by. He called it cultivating a spirit of revelation. He trained his mind to begin to apprehend “the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us.” I have not mastered waking up an hour and a half early, but I try to practice this each day. It has been a way of tending to the fire. I invite you to try it.
Pray
God of wonders, help us to see the riches of being in covenant with You and Your people. Help us to continually grow so that we can readily see Your mighty acts of love and power all around us. Amen
Go with God!
