19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord. 4 1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.
In those days the Philistines mustered for war against Israel, and Israel went out to battle against them; they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle was joined, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle.
Reflect
Being a parent, I know what it means to have my “words fall to the ground.” I try to tell my children something, they already know everything and there they go…my words falling on the ground.
Another thing this phrase reminds me of is to be careful in my speech. I am sure that if Samuel had been talking carelessly that the Lord would not have cared much whether Samuels words fell to the ground or not. But, Samuel was serious in serving God in both what he did and what he said. He was careful. Our words are powerful. It is one way that we reflect the image of God. God spoke creation into existence and in the same way, we can speak words that build up or we can speak words that tear down.
As Paul writes in Ephesians, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
Let us be attentive to our words that God will use them to build up those who need it.
Pray
God, fill my heart with goodness and let the words of my lips be pleasing and acceptable in your sight. Amen
