Luke 15:1-10 (NRSV)
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
“Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Reflect
Things lost, like keys and glasses. It seems I am always looking for things I have misplaced. These things are not important and can be replaced.
In these two Parables Jesus talks about a lost sheep and a lost coin. In the first the person has ninety-nine more but hunts and calls until he finds that one missing sheep. He rejoices when the sheep is found even though he had more at home. The woman that loses the one coin goes out of her way to find the one coin even though she has many more and again rejoices to find just that one.
Jesus tells us that this is how God rejoices the one sinner repents. So as the church we should be the face of Christ to a world that is searching. How great it would be for God to rejoice with us when we show his love to a lost sheep.
Pray
Father, Sometimes I am too busy and too comfortable to remember I am to show your love to the lost. I forget to seek and search for the lost and lonely. Help me to remember to put myself out where you would have me got to be more like you. Amen
Go with God!
