Luke 10:21-24 (NRSV)
At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
Reflect
Jesus gets tickled. Can you hear Him chuckling? He is amused by how people go about trying to find God. “Perhaps we can figure God out,” people think; “Or maybe, we can study our way to God.” Let me ask you a question. Could a beetle comprehend astrophysics? Well, the difference between the intelligence of human beings and God is far greater!
The truth is we cannot find God. We will not discover God or comprehend God. Our only hope to know God is for God to reveal Godself to us. The theological term for this is condescension. God, in Christ, approaches us in ways we can recognize and respond. We don’t have to be smart or clever, just open and trusting.
And what does God reveal? God wants a relationship with us. When we respond to God’s personal revelations, we discover things about God that we never knew, we never knew. First among them is that we are loved beyond our ability to comprehend. If we recognize how implausible, unmerited and gracious/generous/good that is, we might find ourselves chuckling too.
Pray
Lord God, we are eternally grateful that You have revealed Yourself to us. In You, we have found love, grace and mercy, and also, delight. Expand our understanding of You that our relationship with You might be even more sweet, full and joyous.
Go with God!
