Acts 3:11-16 (NRSV)

While he clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s Portico, utterly astonished. When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.

Reflect

Throughout the Bible, we are shown examples of the greatness of God by the works of God’s own hand. Looking just at the story of Moses, God spared the life of Moses as an infant, sent plagues to free the Israelites, parted the Red Sea, provided food and water in the desert for years, and protected the Israelites from other armies. These remarkable things are but a small portion of how God miraculously cared for God’s people during this time. Even today, God shows us daily the magnitude of what God can do.

In 1993, I survived a horrific car accident that in all likelihood should’ve killed me. My car flipped over twice and rolled down a 40-foot embankment. I walked away from that accident without a scratch. The state trooper who responded to the wreck said he had never seen someone survive such a crash, much less walk away from it. I’m not at all equating my experience to that of Moses, but it begs the question: Why are we surprised at what God can do? Just like the villagers who were surprised to see the man walking in today’s scripture, people act surprised when they see the works of God before them. The God that created the world can surely do anything!

Pray

Loving God, every day we are confronted with the wonders of your infinite power. We should not be surprised at what you can do, but instead, revel in the abundance and immensity of your love for us. We love you so much, God, and are thankful for you. Amen.
