Luke 5:27-32 (NRSV)
After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up, left everything, and followed him.
Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them. The Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Reflect
There is something intimate about sharing a meal with someone. That’s why we often go out to eat on dates with our romantic interests and why it’s special to set down at the table as a family and share supper together.
Eating with people was also a large part of Jesus’ ministry. And one of the things that Jesus often did was share a meal with those who others would not. People like the tax collectors of the day. This is even one of the things that eventually lead to his death.
When is the last time we shared a meal with someone who is different than us? When is the last time we were intentional about getting to know someone who might look different, talk different, vote different, or dress differently than we do?
Pray
God, help me get to know someone who is different than me in some way today.
Go with God!
