Justice is defined by many dictionaries as fairness or equal treatment. The scriptures in Isaiah and many others throughout the Bible proclaim and order justice. The prophets even threatened the people with death and destruction if they were not fair and just. Jesus takes this to another level when he says we are not only to be fair, but he even commands us to go beyond being fair. We are commanded to love our enemies and if someone asks for our coat, give them two if we have them. Is this fair? What about an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Isn’t that fair? Isn’t that justice?
Jesus clearly taught that the vindictiveness and injustice of the Old Testament; whether toward the Jews or by the Jews, was wrong. The kingdom of God, the way things were supposed to be, is a way of forgiveness and reconciliation. We are to go out of our way to bring justice to those who have suffered injustice. We are to make amends even when the other person has wronged us. Is this fair? This may not be justice to a lot of people. But to those of us who proclaim to be followers of Christ it is the way we are commanded to follow.
Pray
O Lord, help us to do the hard work to be like Christ. Amen.
Go with God.
