Psalm 23 is one of the most recognized chapters in the Bible. These words of comfort are often used at funerals. These words of faith speak to us at those times when we are hurting and in mourning. I do not know much of the Bible by heart. I did not grow up in a church where Bible verses were memorized and by the time I got to seminary, my brain was so old it could not retain much. But my second-grade teacher, Mrs. Morris, had us memorize the 23rd Psalm and these words have come to me many times when I was in need. I use this Psalm at every graveside burial I do. I have sometimes thought that if the whole world fell apart entirely and I was in prison or a bunker for a long time without electricity or light or a book, I could always recite the 23rd Psalm. Maybe trying to memorize scriptures like these is still a good idea at any age. Let us try to memorize one scripture today that can bring comfort and care to someone in need; maybe even ourselves.
Pray
We give thanks that the Lord is indeed our shepherd and watches over us. Amen.
