I am a big fan of board games and enjoy spending time playing them with family, but one board game I have never been fully into is Monopoly. The reason for this is because I can play it for hours and hours, buying property, houses, and hotels, just to put it all back in the box when the game ends. It seems as though I spent valuable time acquiring assets that never had any real value to me at all.
This is what Christ is talking about in this passage from Matthew. There are people that are flaunting all they have done here on earth by praying out loud, visibly showing that they are fasting, and ringing the bell when they give to the needy. What they are doing is trying to get attention. They want everyone to see how awesome they are and how helpful they are but at the end of the day, they are simply playing Monopoly. When life is over, they don’t take Boardwalk with them. They received their treasure and once life is over, they put it in the box and take nothing with them.
Jesus calls us to be different. He doesn’t want us to shout about how awesome we are or to gain attention for the works we are doing. He wants us to do them in private so that only God knows. This is when the true treasure comes. We don’t do what Christ called us to do so that people can see it; we do it because of the faith we have in Him, which brings us the ultimate treasure, eternal life.
Pray
Father God, I come to you today, first and foremost, to praise you. I love you and am thankful for all you have done for me. I also come to you today to ask for your help to not strive for the approval and attention of man. Give me the strength to give, pray, fast, and follow Christ for your attention only. Thank you for loving me and for giving me a home in heaven to store up my eternal treasures. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Go with God.
