“I am the light of the world,” Jesus told listeners, including Pharisees which had followed him closely while he preached to crowds. As devotes to the Law, they knew that two witnesses to a claim were necessary for the claim to be valid. As Jesus was teaching in the temple, the religious authorities confronted him with a woman who had been caught in adultery. When Jesus did not allow the Pharisees to trick him, a heated, perhaps bitter confrontation followed. In refusing to accept Jesus’s claims to being the Son of God, the Pharisees were putting their spiritual status as well as the Jewish peoples’ in danger. Jesus was blunt, telling the rulers that they did not know God; they would all die in their sins, but Jesus’s truth would make them free. It is so tempting in our time and our sense of being one of God’s children to view others as lost for good. Many who we may approach about their relationship with God may react as did the Pharisees: “Who are you?” “I don’t have a need for freedom.” However, as occurred in the temple that day, people will be drawn to the light that Jesus represents.
Pray
God of truth, reassure us that Jesus is the Messiah and the light of the world. Help us to recognize that through Jesus Christ redemption is available while at the same time rejection of the Christ will bring about destruction and that our ministry includes assisting ohers to believ in Jesus as Your son and our savior. Amen.
Go with God.
