In reading today’s newspaper headlines or viewing today’s television news programming, it is easy to become uncomfortable with what is going on around us and what may follow. The often used phrase “and it’s about to get worse” expresses this sense of despair, and in its extreme, hopelessness. Seemingly, it is becoming more dangerous to venture outside of the home. We’ve learned to become more cautious in the grocery store or shopping mall parking lot. We’ve learned which roadways traverse neighborhoods that have experienced high incidences of assaults and robberies and therefore we plan our trips in order to avoid such areas. Elijah expressed such despair when he knew he was marked for death by the king’s wife, Jezebel. He was physically on the run and experience exhaustion. In a similar manner, we often feel exhausted by what seems to be a world gone mad. But God reassured Elijah that he was not alone in his faithfulness and that those who remained faithful would be rewarded. As we feel bewildered by a world gone mad, we should look to the conversation between God and Elijah as recounted by Paul. The remnant of believers will be rewarded. God will not abandon the faithful and through Christ will draw more faithful persons to him. God does what God does because He chooses to do it.
Pray
God of faithfulness, remind us of Elijah’s fear of the future and Your response that we are not alone in our faithfulness and worship of You. As you preserved Elijah for additional service, remind us that we, too, have additional time for ministry.
Go with God.
