During the last few years, there has been a battle about misinformation. Some have called it the biggest threat to our way of life; our democracy is at stake. Hyperbole is everywhere. The funny thing is that if you don’t have a political or ideological side you can see the crazy in “misinformation.” We are supposed to rely on the “experts” when reading for information. Again, the last three years have exposed that experts are only considered experts when they testify to whatever side you happen to subscribe. This shouldn’t be surprising. The world is full of ignorance. Paul writes to the Corinthians in his second letter, “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing clearly the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” The world doesn’t know truth. No one in this world will be able to tell the difference between good and bad information.
We Christians, though, can be renewed in our minds by the Holy Spirit. The problem isn’t the misinformation. That is all the world has to give. What we, as Christians, have to do is train our minds to the truth. How do we do this? Paul tells us, “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” We submit our minds to the Holy Spirit; we submit our minds to the Bible. We can become a proper filter by which only those true and honorable things fill our minds. Be careful because there are also wolves in sheep’s clothing. Sometimes we allow ourselves to be sucked into stupid ideas because it sounds good to our ears, but if we pause and submit these things to the Holy Spirit we see that even those ideas are not honorable or pure.
Pray
Lord, help us not to become parrots to the ideologies of this world but instead to be lights in the darkness. Amen.
Go with God.
