There is a concept in Hinduism that has found firm footing in our pop culture today. It is the concept of Karma. John Lenon twisted the concept of Karma when he introduced the western world to his song “Instant Karma.” The song includes, “Instant Karma’s gonna get you Gonna knock you off your feet.” Well, there is no such thing as “instant karma” in Hinduism. For the Hindu, Karma is a lifelong process by which you live life, and if you have done well enough, you will be reincarnated into a better caste (higher position) in your next life.
We don’t believe in a caste system in Christianity, and neither do we believe in reincarnation. We believe that this life is all we get, then the judgment. Paul here is speaking about this life and the next. Paul reminds us that no sin is hidden, and no one is free of the consequences. As David has said, where can we flee from God’s presence?
Paul here is reminding us that when we sin, there are consequences. Whether it is something like smoking or drinking too much, the chances are that our bodies will break down over time. Or if it is something like stealing where no one will ever find out, but God will. We will eventually answer for our sin.
We reap what we sow.
Paul encourages us to reap that will grow into a harvest of righteousness and love. That is the “karma” we desire as Christians.
Pray
Almighty God, all things are laid bare before You. You desire good things for Your children, so You give us commandments and instructions that will lead to a life of flourishing. Help us to follow them. Amen.
Go with God.
