I hate letting people down. I hate even the thought of letting people down. So, sometimes I am overzealous in my promises to people. I will say yes to almost anything because I want to do all that I can to help someone. But then…on occasion, the time comes when I can not fulfill one of my promises. Not on purpose, but because I have simply run out of time or because I find out that I do not have the skills needed to do the job.
The worst part is, of course, that I let my friend down. I wonder if this sounds familiar either because you have personally experienced it or because you have read about it, like in the life of Peter. Peter has a wonderful personality that, when it comes to Jesus, he is Yes, Yes, Yes! But as the old saying goes, his “mouth writes checks that his body can’t cash.” I do not think that there was any evil intent with Peter. He loved Jesus so very much. He just wasn’t mature.
I know this feeling. I think one of the greatest parts of John’s Gospel is this passage. Peter knows he has messed up. I am not a biblical scholar, so I can not go into the details of the conversation between Jesus and Peter. As I read it, here you have two friends. One did something stupid and the other will not give up on their friendship. I am reminded of the song, “What a Friend We have in Jesus.”
Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care
Precious Savior, still our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee
Take it to the Lord in prayer
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee
Thou wilt find a solace there
Thou wilt find a solace there
Pray
Jesus, for the multiple times I have been less than great, You still love me. Help me to be that type of friend to someone in need. In Jesus name, Amen.
Go with God.
