Moses at the Burning Bush
3 Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness and came to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight and see why the bush is not burned up.” 4 When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
Reflect
In yesterday’s reading, Jacob met God unexpectedly. Today, it is Moses’ turn to meet Jehovah. These two men were used by God to fulfill the promise to Abraham, but they were very different people. Jacob was raised by God-fearing Isaac and Rebecca, while Moses was raised in the home of an Egyptian princess. Jacob spent an entire night with angels and woke aware of God’s presence, yet he still placed conditions on his worship. Moses, seeing the burning bush, was curious, eager to learn who or what could cause such an unusual sight. When God called his name, Moses simply answered, “Here I am.”
Once Moses expressed his willingness to be with God, God gave him his assignment. There were no conditions on Moses’ part, just humble awe.
Why does it seem easier for someone who has just met God to surrender completely, while those who have “known” Him longer resist?
Pray
Dear God, may my heart be humble in Your presence and willing to follow with no strings attached. Amen.
Go with God.
