169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word.
170 Let my supplication come before you;
deliver me according to your promise.
171 My lips will pour forth praise,
because you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your promise,
for all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my delight.
175 Let me live that I may praise you,
and let your ordinances help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek out your servant,
for I do not forget your commandments.
Reflect
When I reflect on my life and my shortcomings, I despair a little bit. I identify with the Psalmist, “ Let my cry come before you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word. Let my supplication come before you; deliver me according to your promise.”
I want a deeper understanding of God’s words, but even more, a greater ability to do God’s word. I know God’s commandments are right, and when I do them, my life becomes full, and praise overflows. This Psalmist has a vision of a life well lived following God’s commandments, and they want desperately to live according to the commandments.
The first step in leading a life that is pleasing to God and to us is confession. Our Psalmist writes, “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek out your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.”
That’s my prayer for this morning. I invite you to pray with me and desire God’s ways in our lives.
Pray
Almighty and merciful God, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to the world in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O merciful God, for his sake, that we may live a holy, just, and humble life for the glory of your holy name. Amen
Go with God!
