The Authority of Jesus Questioned
20 One day as he was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders 2 and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?” 3 He answered them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: 4 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” 5 They discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
Reflect
You have probably attended a class in which the teacher said no question was off limits. You were free to ask whatever you liked. The teacher promised not to ridicule you and to give you the best answer the he or she could offer. Teachers make such statements to encourage student participation and dialogue.
Notice, however, that the greatest teacher, Jesus Christ, did not answer all questions thrown his way. When religious leaders asked by what authority he said what he said and did what he did, Jesus countered with his own question. Likewise, when leaders asked whether or not it was lawful to pay taxes to Rome, Jesus became opaque, leaving us to figure out on our own what belongs to God and what belongs to Caesar. And of course, when his disciples famously asked him when the End would arrive, he said he didn’t know.
We want to know a lot of things, and it’s not wrong to ask questions. But, Jesus prefers to tell us a few important things. His students are wise when they let him set the agenda and when they learn from him. Maybe we don’t need all the answers we think we need.
Are there questions you keep on asking that you need to give up?
Pray
God, you are altogether wise and good. Help us to live without having all the answers we wish we had. And help us to trust that you reveal what we need to know through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
