28 “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 He answered, ‘I will not,’ but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The father went to the second and said the same, and he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him, and even after you saw it you did not change your minds and believe him.
Reflect
It’s hard to show up. One of the sons said he’d show up but didn’t. One didn’t want to show up but did it anyway. I see myself in both sons in this parable. There have been times when I have been enthusiastic about a project. This is usually during the planning phase when ideas are brainstormed, and possibilities are explored. Following through on the plans is another story. I worked for an agency once that had a lot of great ideas but lacked implementation. Somebody needs to show up. I have also been indifferent to a project and opted out of participating. Later, sitting on the couch, with the remote in one hand and potato chips in the other, I will admonish myself. Then I’ll get up, put on my shoes, and direct myself to the task. I decide to show up. I like myself better when I do what I’m supposed to do albeit begrudgingly than when I say I will do something and bailout. I saw a t-shirt once that read “Sorry I’m Late. I didn’t want to come.” I can relate. There have been many times I would have missed God’s blessings if I hadn’t shown up. Is there something you’re ambivalent about that deep down you know you need to do? Is there a shut-in you need to call and check on? Are there meals that need to be delivered? Is there a new mother who needs a break? Sometimes you just need to show up.
Pray
Eternal and Loving God, Forgive me when I ignore your work. Move me from a place of complacency to one of diligence. Show me the work you would have me do and give me the strength and mindset to do it. Thank you for patience and love. In Christ’s name, Amen.
Go with God!
