Godlessness in the Last Days
3 You must understand this, that in the last days distressing times will come. 2 For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unfeeling, implacable, slanderers, profligates, brutes, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid them! 6 For among them are those who make their way into households and captivate immature women, overwhelmed by their sins and swayed by all kinds of desires, 7 who are always studying yet never able to recognize truth. 8 As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people, of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith, also oppose the truth. 9 But they will not make much progress because, as in the case of those two men, their folly will become plain to everyone.
Reflect
All of the things mentioned in today’s scripture come down to one simple, but dangerous word – pride. We all know being prideful is wrong. Pride is having an excessively high opinion of oneself. But, it is also a group of lions. But that’s not the kind of pride I want to write about today.
Pride will lead us to make the wrong decisions. Many clever sales pitches end with “Let me show you something several of your neighbors said you couldn’t afford.” What just happened? They appealed to your pride.
Proverbs 16:18 is summed up in our present-day culture as “pride goes before a fall.” Pride keeps the sinner from acknowledging he is wrong.
Think back to a time you thought you were right but then proven to be wrong. Did you quickly admit you were wrong, or did you try to defend yourself first? None of us wants to be wrong, but many times we are. Let’s not be like the two people mentioned in the scripture. Truth wins out in the end, and the pride crashes down around our feet, our shoulders, our ears, and over our heads. Even worse is that other people will see the truth and that our pride is not based in facts. How embarrassing that will be!!
Pray
Dear Lord, we often run through life assured that we are right. We act as though everyone else’s thinking is less than ours. Help us to be humble in how we speak and treat people. Help us to be humble enough to seek your ways and thoughts. Amen
