Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.
20 In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 Then Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. 24 So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Reflect
This passage is one of those more encouraging passages that helps everyone at some point in his/her life. Ask and it shall be given. There are benefits in believing in God! If everything were just that easy. Now, when we pray for something and it does not happen or we do not receive an answer. It does make one scratch one’s head. “Why, Lord?”, we ask. Did we believe as strongly as we should have? Was it just not God’s will? Or, the answer came and it was not what we expected!
The Lord has the power to do all of these things. He can answer you with a yes or a no, or he can give you an answer you do not expect somewhere in the middle to something where the outcome is totally different than what we would expect. We tend to put God in a box, limiting his power to our understanding. With God, anything is possible, because He is all-powerful and all-knowing. He may not answer you in the way or in the time you expect, but he will answer in His way.
Pray
Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to keep the faith that you will answer our prayers. We know that you may not answer in the time or manner that we may expect or want but, you are the one in control of our lives and we live for your glory and honor. In your Son’s name, Amen.
Go with God!
