Psalm 2
God’s Promise to His Anointed
1 Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and his anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord has them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear;
with trembling 12 kiss his feet,
or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Happy are all who take refuge in him.
Reflect
It is easy for us to feel that the world is farther from God now than ever. After all, we only have to turn on the news or in many cases, just walk outside our doors. But the psalmist seems to know this world as well. The psalmist also lives in a world that has not only strayed away from God but even rises up against God. Unless I miss my guess, we have all been in those situations where we feel that evil is prevailing and God is on the losing end. In these times, our reactions may be of fear, worry, doubt, anxiety, increased stress, or even hatred towards others. Those are human reactions. In those times, do you want to know God’s reaction? When evil rises up, the psalmist tells us in verse 4 that God laughs. In situations where that is probably the last emotion on our minds, it is God’s response. Beloved, that is the power of God. Isn’t it comforting to know that no matter what, God has this. No matter what threatens, we are under the protection of one who can laugh back in the face of evil.
Pray
God of laughter, we count our days as good days or bad days. Help us to realize that every day is a good day because come what may, we are under your protection. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
