The Divine Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
I love to sing and Psalm 23 is the only Psalm that I have ever sung. I have read this Psalm probably more than any other Psalm not only for myself, my children and grandchildren and for my congregation. I have preached this Psalm more than any other Psalm.
If there was a go to “Psalm” it would be Psalm 23. When you reflect upon the Psalm written by David you begin to understand that it is an affirmation and declaration of his faith in God. David’s relationship with God enabled him to know God as creator, shepherd, provider, sustainer, restorer, protector, comforter, healer, and Savior.
When I reflect upon my faith journey with God, I realize that my relationship with God has enabled me to know God as David did. This is my “go to” psalm. As my grandchildren have gotten older and they call and want me to pray for them or about a particular situation in their life, I always share with them, that when we hang up from our call, for them to close their eyes and say the 23rd Psalm. At the same time they are saying the Psalm, I will be praying for them. May the Good Shepherd give them the comfort, peace and assurance that God is listening and will answer?
Pray
God we give thanks for the assurance of knowing that You are our Shepherd and comfort of Your presence as we walk each day through the valley of the shadow of death. Amen
Go with God!
