Jesus Weeps
28 When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
Reflect
First, let us give thanks for John 11:35. It is the lazy memorizer’s dream. Jesus wept. Always a good go-to for the young Christian tasked with memorizing a verse of Scripture.
But, let us also give thanks for John 11:35 because it reminds us who Jesus is. Jesus is one that as the Book of Hebrews says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” We give thanks because Jesus loves us. Jesus loves humanity. Jesus cares deeply about the things we care about. There have been many attempts to figure out why Jesus cried here. I mean, he knew Lazarus would be resurrected. I think Jesus cried because he loved humanity and hated the effect sin has created in the world.
If you have lost a loved one, then you know the feeling of emptiness, of the complete break of fellowship that it brings. One day, your loved sitting in a chair at the dinner table, the next day, its empty and it will remain empty, for the rest of your life. That is hard to think about. We were created to live, to fellowship, to have fulfilment and death is the exact opposite of that.
I think Jesus weeps because he loves.
Pray
Thank you, Lord, that you do love us and that you continue to, even when we give little reason for you to love us. Amen.
