First, let us give thanks for John 11:35. It is the lazy memorizer’s dream.  Jesus wept. Always a good go-to for the young Christian tasked with memorizing a verse of Scripture.  

But, let us also give thanks for John 11:35 because it reminds us who Jesus is. Jesus is one that as the Book of Hebrews says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” We give thanks because Jesus loves us. Jesus loves humanity. Jesus cares deeply about the things we care about. There have been many attempts to figure out why Jesus cried here. I mean, he knew Lazarus would be resurrected. I think Jesus cried because he loved humanity and hated the effect sin has created in the world. 

If you have lost a loved one, then you know the feeling of emptiness, of the complete break of fellowship that it brings. One day, your loved sitting in a chair at the dinner table, the next day, its empty and it will remain empty, for the rest of your life. That is hard to think about. We were created to live, to fellowship, to have fulfilment and death is the exact opposite of that.

I think Jesus weeps because he loves.
