Jesus Is Rejected by the Jews
22 At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; 26 but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”
Reflect
If you are a careful reader of the Bible, you may have noticed that one of the things John likes to highlight is the reactions of different people to Christ’s claims about himself. In some scenes, the disciples can hardly believe what Jesus is saying or doing, while a blind person or a Samaritan woman completely understands. Sometimes the learned and wise Jews are befuddled, but a Gentile gets it.
And you might think Jesus kind of likes to hear and see the reactions, because he never makes it easy, for anyone really. This text is a great example. These Jews act like they want to believe, but first, they want to hear it directly from him. “Tell us plainly,” they say. But Jesus won’t. He is essentially saying that talk is cheap. The Scribes and Pharisees talk. They talk a lot, but their work bears no fruit. Jesus instead says, “Look at my work.” If you were a person that valued fruit over talk, you would already know.
This isn’t Jesus saying you have to be part of some mystery club, already one of his sheep. Jesus is actually calling those people to repent and to seek the truth. When we seek truth, we find Jesus.
Pray
God, help us to repent of our need for absolute certainty in our talk and instead seek to bear fruit that brings a harvest of righteousness. Amen.
Go with God!
