The Resurrection of Jesus
24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in, they did not find the body. 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. 6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” 8 Then they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

“Jesus Is Still Risen”
Focusing Idea: Why do we look for the living among the dead?
A few of the female followers of Jesus first discovered the good news that Jesus’s tomb was empty, but this only threw them into greater confusion as they could not understand what it might mean, and the apostles thought their whole story was “an idle tale” [verse 11]. Yet Peter, impulsive as ever, and probably still feeling overwhelmed by guilt because of his denials of Jesus, ran to the tomb to check out their story. He too found it empty. In our minds, we can see the confused look on his face. We can also picture the women moving through the garden with heavy hearts, oblivious to the dawning spring morning. They were oblivious, above all, to the glorious presence of the risen Christ not a stone’s throw away; nonetheless, these women reveal the qualities of good disciples in their capacity to seek our Jesus.
I ask us not to treat the resurrection as a mere story, but as the message that transforms our world and gives hope to everyone. Why do you look for the living among the dead? You are not in any tomb, Lord; the tomb is empty. You are not a dead hero to be studied in retrospect. You are alive, and meeting with us, at our sides, in our hearts, feeding us in Holy Communion. The report brought by the women, dismissed by the apostles, is the creed by which we live.
Pray
Lord, help us to realize that when we are weighed down with sorrow, anxiety or hopelessness, You are no further from us than You were to the women in that garden on the first Easter morning. Amen.
