21 He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; 2 he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4 for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
Reflect
This passage shames me in so many ways. I am in awe of the poor widow. Imagine cashing in all of you bank and investment accounts, selling all your possessions; houses, cars, TV’s and giving the proceeds to the church? Imagine leaving the church. Where would you go? You have no house. How would you get there? You have no car. You would quickly realize how serious that line in the Lord’s Prayer really is, “Give us this day our daily bread.” One part of me prays that I will never have to have that much faith. The other part of me knows that I must.
What percentage do you give to the church and is it a regular and sacrificial gift?
Pray
Abundant God, you give us so much and yet we act as if we are living a life of scarcity. What we have is never enough. We give back to you only as much as is easy to give rather than giving as if we recognize that we have only what is given us by you. Help us to count the cost. Help us to react to those in need out of our abundance. Freely we have received from you. Freely we give to others. Amen.
Go with God!
