Repent or Perish
13 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ 8 He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Reflect
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because the people were not bearing fruit. They were setting up their own destruction. They did not repent. A worrisome trend I see on Facebook and the news is some of my fellow Christians seem to be awaiting the destruction of people who do not believe right, act right, or think right. It is almost as they are going to be proud and happy when God judges this world. I would advise humility. Jesus wept for those who would hang him on a cross. He did not gloat or boast over them. He loved them and their blindness broke his heart.
Do you have compassion and love for those who “can’t get right?” or do you have an “I told you so” type attitude.
Pray
Lord give us eyes to see the world as you do, give us hearts to love the world as you do, give us hands to do the works you would have us do. Even in a world that might hate us. Amen
