It may seem somewhat strange to talk about ruling and serving at the same time because so often in our culture, just like the first century, we think of leadership as a glorious position in which the leader is this powerful person who makes the most money, who gets to call the shots, tells people what to do and who gets all the credit when things go right. And we think about servants as people who are at the beck and call of the hotshots, who have to work hard to make just enough money to live so that the leaders can make more and more money. 

In our text this morning, we have an illustration of Christ’s understanding of power and the world’s understanding of power. For Christ, the way to power was through the cross, through humility, through giving up His for the sake of others. The only way to greatness in the Kingdom of heaven is through servanthood.

How have you reflected this upside-down value? In what ways have you become a servant?
