A Lamp under a Jar
16 “No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. 18 Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.”
The True Kindred of Jesus
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 But he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Reflect
There is something interesting about this Scripture. Luke gives a visual of two types of lamps in verse 16 – one that is hidden, and one that is put on a lampstand to light the way for the well-being of all. Verse 17 reveals that all things hidden will be revealed. So why, when he is speaking of light, are we admonished to LISTEN? We see with our eyes, but how do we, as children of the covenant, listen so we can discover, see or perceive the secret treasures of the kingdom of God? (see v. 10). Rather than listening with our ears, perhaps Christ is calling us to listen with our hearts. If we are to love God with all our hearts, souls and minds, and our neighbor as ourselves, perhaps we come with a listening heart and ask the author of Truth and the source of Light to quicken our spirits to hear what His heart is speaking to our hearts, and in turn, be an obedient witness to the Light.
In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God . . . in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. (John 1:1 & 18)

Pray
Father of Light, I acknowledge that you are the source of light and truth. Quicken my spirit, by your Spirit, to hear your voice speaking in the darkness and light the way that my heart might be open to your truth. May my thoughts, words and actions reflect your light. Prepare and lead me to share your light with someone whose need is to see you with their heart. In Christ, Amen.
