Prepare yourself to discern what is and what is not of God today. Still yourself so you can hear how God is calling you.

20 One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and telling the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders 2 and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?” 3 He answered them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: 4 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” 5 They discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
Reflect
“God said it, I believe it!” Most of us agree with that phrase. The problem is not what God says, but how we interpret it. This isn’t anything new. The chief priests, scribes, and elders in our Gospel passage would say the same thing, “the Torah says it, I believe it!” How then could they argue with the Word Incarnate? The hard truth is that sometimes we want the authority to rest in our reason, our power, and our comfort. When the Bible says something, we do not disagree, but we find ways to reinterpret it that make it suit our needs. We must be on guard.
We all follow multiple sources of authority. Whose authority do you follow?
Pray
God of all power and might, we always second guess ourselves, weighing one side with the other side of an argument. We don’t want to be on the wrong side and care less about what the sides believe and how they act, just so we are not on the side of our enemies, real or imagined. Lord, show us the way to be the source of peace and unity because we know that peace and unity was what Jesus taught. Show us your way, free of labels and conflict. Amen.
