A New Covenant
31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.
Reflect
What a promise! Often times we are promised things in life and end up disappointed or frustrated because those promises were empty. In our passage in Jeremiah, this is the greatest promise in the history of pretty much everything. Nothing any man, woman, or child could ever do would make a promise as big and important as this one.
Not only was this important to the people of Israel, it is also crucial to us as believers today. It reminds us that God has been in control from the start. No matter what comes our way, God is in control. He promised to send a new covenant and, through Christ Jesus, the promise was fulfilled. What an impact this has on us a believers. The promise God made did not fall flat. It didn’t fail to live up to expectation or fail to be exactly what He said it would be. If God is going to fulfil the biggest promise ever made, will He not also fulfil the specific promises He makes to us in this passage to? The promise to forgive and forget our sins. Hold on to that promise today and don’t let the past interfere with God’s future. You are loved and, thanks to Christ, you are forgiven.
Pray
Father God how wonderful it is to be forgive and loved by you. We don’t deserve you. We don’t earn your love and yet you give us your son to die for us. Thank you for the promise you fulfilled through Christ and are continually fulfilling in our lives every single day. Thank you for a hope and a future that nothing can tarnish. We love you and praise you. May your will be done, in Jesus name, Amen.
