22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Reflect
One Saturday afternoon, my wife and I were watching television while our children were playing in their rooms. My youngest daughter came running into the room with tears in her eyes. Her older sister had gotten frustrated with her and had pushed her down. While Mom was consoling the youngest, I had to go upstairs and have a talk with the oldest. I found her sitting on her couch, crying to herself. I immediately thought maybe the youngest sister had done something to her but her emotions were driven by guilt and shame. “I am so sorry.” “I am such a bad person.” So, I sat beside her, held her and just whispered in her ear “I Love you.” She looked up at me with tears in her eyes and asked, “Why?” I just looked at her and said, “because you are mine.” Perhaps there are times when we have felt unworthy because of something we have said or done. And we are reminded of those beautiful words of grace; redemption, hope in salvation. Paul’s favorite word to use to describe the relationship God has towards us, “adoption.”
If you find yourself asking God, “Why do you love me.” Here these words, “You are mine!”
Pray
God, remind us today of your un-failing love among our failing lives. Amen.
