55 When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this young man?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” 56 The king said, “Inquire whose son the stripling is.” 57 On David’s return from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
18 When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5 David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved.
Reflect
Saul looked out and saw something that had to scare him to death. Goliath, this huge giant that had intimidated an entire army fell and was killed by a shepherd boy with a sling shot. David didn’t get time to celebrate the victory. Saul sent for him and when David came to him he was still carrying Goliath’s head. I’m sure Saul desired to get rid of David, because he was a threat to his throne, but Jonathan made a covenant with David which forced Saul’s hand. Saul put David in his service and gave him a high rank in the army and David was successful in everything he did.
David trusted God and because he was faithful to God, God was faithful to him. God’s favor was on David. We have access to that same favor. We all face giants in our lives. The giants are intimidating and scary, but God equips us with everything we need to face those giants. We might look at our situation and see no way out, but when we have God we look at that same obstacle and see an amazing victory. You might be in this situation right now. You are in a situation where your faith and your fear are on a collision course. Be strong and don’t lose hope! You are a child of the one true God! You are Highly Favored!
Pray
God, when I am afraid, remind me of your faithfulness and strength. I can do all things you have proposed for me. Amen
