A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord guards the city,
the guard keeps watch in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives sleep to his beloved.
3 Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons of one’s youth.
5 Happy is the man who has
his quiver full of them.
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
Reflect
Psalm 127 only contains 5 verses, but in those 5 verses are contained many truths. The psalm was written by Solomon, who was in charge of building the Lord’s temple, and Solomon acknowledged that any building not built by the Lord would be built in vain. One needs to trust in the Lord first and foremost in everything. And, it was the Lord who directed the building of the temple. As he also mentioned in Ecclesiastes, early days and late nights focused on earthly work brings no eternal rewards. It is vain anxious toil. Finally, children are often looked at as inconveniences or hardships today, yet, Solomon said they are a heritage from the Lord, like arrows in the hand of a warrior. We are to raise our children in the Lord, trusting Him to build our house. Children raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord can then go out as arrows pricking the heart of the world, following the example of the parents who raise them to trust in the Lord.
Pray
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that I don’t try to build where you don’t want built, and what I do build, I pray that you build through me. I pray that I focus on doing the work of your will and not my own, ultimately showing all that look to me how to trust in you. Amen
