31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Reflect
It is often said that what the world needs now is love, as said in the song lyrics. As Christians, we are commanded to love one another. But, the kicker is that Jesus said that we are to do it as He loved us. Earlier in Chapter 13, He illustrated this by service in washing the disciples’ feet. Paul writes in Philippians 2:3-5, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” Paul was speaking of how Jesus emptied Himself, and Jesus regularly tells His disciples to deny themselves. When looking to others, we have to forget ourselves. We are to look first to Jesus and to others.
Pray
Lord, help me to deny myself, my wants, and my desires, and to look to you first and foremost. Help me to obey when you point me to others to minister to their needs. Amen
