Romans 16:17-20
New Revised Standard Version
17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to keep an eye on those who cause dissensions and offenses, in opposition to the teaching that you have learned; avoid them. 18 For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. 19 For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise in what is good and guileless in what is evil. 20 The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Reflect
Have you ever heard anyone use smooth talk and flattery? There are—and always have been—people who verbally proclaim their faith in God while simultaneously living a life that denies him. Often, they are the popular, trendy, fashionable people and our human nature wants to follow them. They seem happy, rich, adored; they have it all. But Paul reminds us that is a lie.
These people cause division and confusion in the church. They are being used by Satan, whether they know it or not. We are called to continue in obedience, be wise about what is good, and be guileless—innocent–about evil.
How can we know when someone is not from God? Paul tells us: they teach in opposition to what we learned from Christ. It is that simple. Follow Christ and you will not be led astray.
Pray
Lord, help me not to be beguiled by the smooth talkers of this world, but rather to keep my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith.
Go with God!
