James 3:13-18
New Revised Standard Version
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.
Reflect
There has always been a fine line between tact and saying too much. I don’t always see the difference between telling it like it is and just being rude. I think it is why I really don’t like politics. The ones I think are rude and obnoxious, others praise for their honesty. The other thing I don’t understand about politics is how one side can be so right and the other side so wrong. Whatever happened to working together for the good of the people? It seems to be all about what one does right and the other does wrong. It is all about self-inflation.
James is telling us that true wisdom doesn’t look to say look at me but rather look at us. Promoting peace and working together just doesn’t seem like the way this world works but it is what we are called to do. Understanding that it isn’t just about me and that there isn’t us and them… it is simply us. A really wise person will look beyond the differences to see the similarities. The really wise will work to bring US all together. The really wise will look for peace and all the ways we can get there. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall reap righteousness.
Pray
Source of all true wisdom, help us to look for ways to bring people together, to promote peace, and work for mercy. It may not be easy for us but it is what you want from us. Make us peacemakers for the Kingdom. Amen.
