Romans 11:25-32
New Revised Standard Version
25 So that you may not claim to be wiser than you are, brothers and sisters, I want you to understand this mystery: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved; as it is written,
“Out of Zion will come the Deliverer;
he will banish ungodliness from Jacob.”
27 “And this is my covenant with them,
when I take away their sins.”
28 As regards the gospel they are enemies of God for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved, for the sake of their ancestors; 29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. 32 For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all.
Reflect
Some days I’m very worried about theology. I want to be sure that my understanding of God and the way God works in the world is as correct and intelligent as it can be. We’ve got so many theories on so many different aspects of our faith, and while it is informative and can help build our faith, there are times when it can be frustrating, too complicated, and divisive.
Paul is writing to attempt to unravel this mystery of salvation for the Jews and the Gentiles. Some days I’m content to let a mystery remain a mystery. I’m content with the knowledge and understanding that God loves me and forgives me, and that God loves you and forgives you. I don’t know who needs to be saved first, nor do I know why. But God knows, and today I’m okay with that.
Today, I’d like to challenge you to be content with the mercy, love, and forgiveness that God grants you. Give your brain a rest and allow these things into your heart. Let today be the kind of day that you don’t have to articulate how you feel, but one where a smile will suit you fine.
Pray
Loving God, we are so amazed at the love you have for us. Allow us to slow things down for a bit, not think too hard, and bask in the love you offer to all of your children. Amen.
Go with God!
