Hebrews 12:3-13
New Revised Standard Version
3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—
“My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
or lose heart when you are punished by him;
6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves,
and chastises every child whom he accepts.”
7 Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? 8 If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. 9 Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. 11 Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.
Reflect
Discipline. It can be a touchy subject. Depending on the time in which you grew up, depends on the type of discipline you received. In this meaning of the word, “using punishment to correct disobedience,” parents discipline their children. I remember the old saying, “apply the board of education to the seat of knowledge”. Today, a lot of parents do not believe in spanking their children. Whatever your mode of discipline for your children, I believe a loving parent should discipline their children. Through discipline, children learn there are rules to follow and consequences for their actions. This is how a loving parent teaches their children. And through this discipline, the children learn respect.
But discipline also has another meaning. The other meaning is “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior. I believe within this definition; it means to persevere – stay focused and never give up. An athlete, a runner, knows how to focus and persevere. They are very “disciplined” in their training so they can run the race through endurance.
In our Scripture today, God disciplines His children. God tells us to not take His discipline lightly and he disciplines the ones He loves. We all go through hardships in life. It is not a bed of roses. We go through financial hardships, relationship hardship, health hardship, etc. These hardships should teach us to lean on God. We learn endurance through the unpleasant circumstances. The perseverance “produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (v. 11) In Verse 12, God tells us to “strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.” In other words, condition ourselves like a runner preparing for their race.
Go. Be disciplined. Endure.
Pray
Loving God, help us to endure hardship and accept it as discipline so that we will strengthen and produce a harvest of righteousness and peace. Amen.
Go with God!
