Proverbs 4:10-27
New Revised Standard Version
10 Hear, my child, and accept my words,
that the years of your life may be many.
11 I have taught you the way of wisdom;
I have led you in the paths of uprightness.
12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered;
and if you run, you will not stumble.
13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
guard her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,
and do not walk in the way of evildoers.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;
turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;
they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know what they stumble over.
20 My child, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Keep straight the path of your feet,
and all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil.
Reflect
I have always had a love of working with children and a love of music. One of my favorite parts of working with children in Sunday School is singing the “good ole” Sunday School songs I grew up singing. And I love to incorporate the hand motions. One of my favorite songs to teach the kids is a full lesson for life. The song, “O Be Careful” teaches how we are supposed to use our eyes, tongue, ears, hands, and feet and keep them clean.
In our Scripture today, God gives instruction to be cautious with how we use our ears, our sight, our mouth, our feet, and our heart. He instructs us to “pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.” In doing so, we should keep His words in our sight and within our hearts. We are to keep our mouths free of perversity and corrupt talk. Our eyes should be focused on God. And our feet should be on a good path, following God. It can be easy to get caught up in the ways of the world. We let our guard down and allow satan to enter our daily lives by listening to negative talk and dirty jokes. We speak negative talk and gossip. We watch tv shows and movies that are perverse. And we go places a Christian should not enter.
We need to remember to keep ourselves pure and pay attention to how we use our senses. God says we are to keep them from perversity and corruption. I always taught my own children and the children I have served that they have two choices to make. They can make a good choice or a bad choice. It is up to them which they choose. Just understand, there are consequences to your actions. Do not follow the path of the wicked. Keep focused on God and His Word.
Pray
Loving God, help us to use our senses and actions for you and your glory. And, that we stay focused on you and your ways in all we do. Amen.
Go with God!
