Psalm 95
New Revised Standard Version
1 O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 O come, let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would listen to his voice!
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your ancestors tested me,
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray,
and they do not regard my ways.”
11 Therefore in my anger I swore,
“They shall not enter my rest.”
Reflect
I love this Psalm. It begins by calling us to worship. Then it describes the God that is to be worshipped. This is no god of our own making or imagination. This God is the ruler of all creation and deserves great praise simply for being. Our first reason to praise God is simply because God is God
The Psalm then brings God down to us. This god is no passive diety. Instead, this God is personal. God desires to be in a relationship with us. God does not simply want to be known because of His work in creation, but because of his great love for us. We are the sheep of God’s pasture and we are fed by God’s own hand.
Finally, we are warned by this Psalm to worship God correctly. We come before God acknowledging His great power, but also with a loving respect and devotion. God speaks to us and if we listen, we can enter into God’s rest, worshipping and praising as we were created to do.
Pray
God, give me ears to hear your voice and in hearing let me echo back praises to You. Protect and care for us as a shepherd cares for sheep. We love You and are loved by You though Jesus Christ. We pray and praise in His most precious name. Amen.
Go with God!
