Cumberland Presbyterians do not have a mandatory order of worship or an official liturgy, but we do follow the form presented in this vision of worship in Isaiah 6. First, we gather in the presence of God in the sanctuary. The sanctuary is not limited to a building; it is the place where God’s people meet for worship. Second, we join with the Seraphs praising God, and in song, we praise God for God’s holiness, majesty, and love. Third, this experience of being in the presence of a holy God leads us to the recognition of our sinfulness. So, like Isaiah, we are driven to confession, asking God to cleanse us from our unrighteousness. We receive the assurance of forgiveness as Isaiah received assurance. Fourth, we hear the word of God read and proclaimed. Lastly, we respond to that proclamation. Our response may be by giving of our tithes and offerings, but also, like Isaiah, we volunteer to go forth from the sanctuary, into the world to bear witness of God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ to the world.
